Open6GE
An open evolution platform for integrating, experimenting, accelerating, automating and validating emerging 6G technologies on today's open 5G and 5G-Advanced foundation.
Overview
Open6GE is a project of the TOSSI Foundation, the Telecom Open Source System Integrator. TOSSI is a neutral foundation for the open telecom stack, built on open standards and open-source innovation.
Open source has come a long way in 5G. There are solid projects for the radio network, the core, orchestration, simulation and cloud infrastructure, and each one does its job well. What is missing is the network they add up to. Open6GE puts those projects together into one stack that can be deployed, extended and tested end to end, instead of a set of parts that only work on their own.
On that base, the project builds the technologies 6G will need: AI-RAN, integrated sensing and communication, non-terrestrial networks, digital twins, accelerated computing, post-quantum security and intelligent automation. The hard part was never the components. It is making them work as one network.
Relationship to TOSSI
Open6GE is where the technologies developed across the TOSSI ecosystem come together as a single platform. The documentation, blog and video material for the underlying work is published on tossi.org, and this site covers the platform itself: what it contains, how the layers fit together, and how to get involved.
Principles
Openness
Open6GE is not intended to become another closed telecom stack. It is built on open-source projects, open interfaces and established industry standards, and it provides a modular foundation that the community can integrate with, extend and contribute back to.
Upstream alignment
Contributions and enhancements are developed in alignment with upstream projects and the wider open-source community, rather than diverging from them.
Reproducibility
A result that cannot be reproduced is not a result. Testbeds run in software wherever possible, scenarios are repeatable, and validation produces evidence that can be audited rather than a one-time demonstration.
Incremental evolution
There is significant work ahead before 6G becomes a commercial reality, and the specifications are not final. The platform therefore evolves from what works today, introducing new technologies progressively rather than waiting for a finished standard.
